My Thoughts on B.I.G’s “Aphrodite” Music Video

B.I.G makes their comeback with “Aphrodite.”

I think this is the first B.I.G music video I’ve ever seen. This video has really great production value: the shots are super crisp, there’s a lot of dynamic lighting and a bunch of effects like water and fire. Visually, it’s a really nice way to be introduced to an underrated group.

As soon as I heard the opening instrumentals, it reminded me of EXO’s “Mama” (just the opening instrumentals though). The song itself is decent as well, but not anything for me to necessarily write home about. Generally everything checks out for this video, so it’s likely I’ll check out their future stuff.

My Thoughts on Jessica’s “Love Me the Same” Music Video

Jessica releases another music video for “Love Me the Same.”

The video features Jessica taking care of her beloved cactus and doing all kinds of things to nurture it. (I’m a pretty big cacti lover myself, so Jessica in this video is basically me.) After she puts her cactus to bed, she wakes up to find her house is filled with leafy plants. In a way, it’s like the cactus has grown from all of her love and spread throughout the house.

Personally, I prefer this song over “Fly.” I think Jessica’s vocals really suit this sort of style and the visuals are quite pretty in this video too. Although I have to admit that if I woke up to a plant takeover of my house (despite how much I like plants), I probably would freak out.

My Thoughts on MONSTA X’s “All In” Music Video

MONSTA X drops a new video for “All In.”

I have to admit I don’t really understand what the music video is about. But after one watch, this is just what I gathered from it.

It seems like the boys live in some kind of dystopia where they’re not treated well and shunned. The boys seem to only have each other and are a tight pack. It looks like Shownu’s father/important man figure is hurt/sick and he resorts to stealing/violence in order to get money to pay for the hospital fees. However by the time he has the money, this man has already passed away and Shownu ends up burning all the money. The other running storyline seems to be about Minhyuk and Hyungwon. They either are really close friends or lovers, but Hyungwon seems to be targeted for abuse and eventually tries to commit suicide by drowning in a bathtub. Minhyuk pours a vial of this flower concoction (which I previously thought had healing abilities, but who knows) into the tub and climbs in with Hyungwon. Not sure if the concoction is meant to heal Hyungwon or if Minhyuk just wants to die in there with him. Anyway, that’s essentially what I think happened.

And well, the video has nothing to do with the song. The track is about putting everything on the line for a girl ’cause she’s worth it. The track is pretty catchy and I think opening with I.M’s rapping verse was a great way of setting up the song. Since the video is a drama video, I’m pretty interested in seeing how the choreo for this looks.

My Thoughts on Jessica’s “Fly” Music Video

Jessica makes her return to the music scene as a soloist with “Fly.”

The video features Jessica living out in some desert and she has receives a postcard from a snow wonderland. She dreams of leaving her desert home to travel to this snow place and she sets out to prepare for her trip.

The song is pretty cutesy and so is the dance. Not a fan of what the backup dancers are wearing; it seems a bit too street for the song & dance style. Her snow climate recreations like the fake sled-riding made for a cute scene. As for the location, I really love the huge colorful painted rock/geographical feature (??? not sure what to call that hill looking thing). I’m super curious about where this location is because if I got to hang around a place like that, I probably wouldn’t want to go to a snow wonderland.

My Thoughts on AOA’s “Good Luck” Music Video

AOA is back with a Baywatch concept for “Good Luck.”

Half the video features the girls as lifeguards running around on the beach (and not saving anyone), while the other half is the girls having parties in various locations. My takeaways from this video are 1) the black outfits with fishnet sleeves and tassel shorts are A++ and 2) the shots of the girls’ silhouettes while dancing/bodyrolling brought up the sexy summer factors & just fit really well with the overall concept.

And did you see all those product placements? I talked about all of the product placements in SISTAR’s “Shake It,” but I think AOA beat them with just how many product placements they had. I wonder if summer is just the time for brands to start planting their products into music videos or something.

My Thoughts on BTS’ “Save Me” Music Video

BTS releases their music video for “Save Me.”

The video is just the boys dancing in a grassy field. It looks like they filmed really early in the morning, so that probably sucked. The choreography looks fun though.

Doesn’t the song sound extremely Justin Bieber-inspired? The ticking clock intro and the trop house sound are super reminiscent of “What Do You Mean?” and perhaps a mix of “Where Are You Now?” (Not that Justin Bieber owns trop house, but I’m just calling a spade a spade.) The song is pretty catchy and I like the melody of the singing lines, but the rapping verses sound like they’ve been forced to fit into the song. In any case, I’d say “Save Me” is much more interesting than “Fire.”

So far, BTS’ latest songs “Fire” and “Save Me” are definitely made for the stage with all the high energy choreography they’ve been showcasing.

My Thoughts on R3hab x f(x)’s Amber & Luna’s “Wave” Music Video

f(x)’s Amber & Luna collaborate with R3hab for “Wave” as part of the SM Station project.

Amber and Luna really suit the upbeat EDM genre. The video isn’t much, but where is this place they filmed?? Looks like a really cool store I’d want to visit. With the super hero intro and the lightning bolt signs in the store, I can’t help but think the old man with the walker is like a vague shoutout to Stan Lee (although I feel like that isn’t intentional).

My Thoughts on Tiffany’s “I Just Wanna Dance” Music Video

Girls’ Generation’s Tiffany makes her solo debut with “I Just Wanna Dance.”

The video features Tiffany entering a diner and tiredly plopping down in a seat. She closes her eyes and suddenly everything turns into retro pop colors. The video is kind of incoherent with its editing and I think the way they switched between Tiffany shots and choreography had really strange timing. I found myself being disoriented by it and not all that engaged. If anything, the thing that impressed me most was the portion of the choreography that was designed for the aerial view and the smooth filming going from regular view to aerial for that part.

This debut didn’t really hook me, but her visuals reminded me of Carly Rae Jepsen and I can’t help but imagine her singing a Carly Rae Jepsen 80s vibe-song and how amazing that could have been.

My Thoughts on Woohyun’s “Nod Nod” Music Video

INFINITE’s Woohyun makes his solo debut with “Nod Nod.”

The video features Woohyun reminiscing when he first met a girl while working at a home photography shop. He finds some of her items that have been stored in a case for a year, one being a camera and the other a map. He opens the map and decides to follow the path she traveled on. When he develops the film on her camera, he realizes that she’s been looking at him as well ever since seeing him at the shop, possibly returning his feelings. Even though it’s too late, he still waits for her.

The storyline isn’t anything new, but the video presents it in a very picturesque way. I get that the video is about remembering a person who is gone, but there were a lot of crying scenes that just made it feel a little too dramatic.

My Thoughts on Akdong Musician’s “How People Move” Music Video

My favorite sibling duo is back with double title tracks for their “Adolescence” album. This post will be about “How People Move.”

The song is about how they’re happy to be humans because it’s fascinating how humans can do the things they do. They sing of how they would hate to be toys or inanimate things. Once again, a really interesting song concept. It reminds me of “Artificial Grass” from their first album in terms of lyric subject, but completely the other way.

The music video features Chanhyuk as the owner of a toy store who goes into a heavily locked up room and Suhyun ends up following him in. She discovers this topsy turvy world where the toys are alive and they end up  strapping Chanhyuk down to a table. The two get trapped in the toy world, as they run away from dice crushing them and even get locked in a cage with their legs chained to a toy prison ball and chain. Eventually, they manage to escape with a lot of difficulty. There’s lots of silly dancing throughout the video, which goes along perfectly with their joy of being human and having human mobility. Like can they get any cuter?

Can always count on AKMU to bring a lot of personality and creativity to their music and videos.
