My Thoughts on Jung Eunji’s “Hopefully Sky” Music Video

Apink’s Eunji makes her solo debut with “Hopefully Sky.”

The song pretty much fulfills every requirement of a spring song with the gentle melody and cherry blossom-filled dreamy music video. I have to say musically, the song isn’t all that memorable, despite Eunji’s pretty vocals. Although, I do appreciate that the video is filmed in her hometown Busan and features a now-Eunji traveling through the town with her child-self and includes references to her personal life and father, which makes the song more meaningful.

My Thoughts on UP10TION’s “Attention” Music Video

UP10TION is back again with “Attention.”

I feel like this group’s been pretty active, making a lot of comebacks. (Hey TOP Media, where’s 100% at? Just wondering.) Personally, I think this song might be the UP10tion song I like best? It’s not exactly the most unique sounding stand-out title track, but it’s catchy and features great choreography so it’s probably the performance I’d like to see most of theirs.  I found the music video to be really engaging, which is good for a song asking a girl to pay “attention” to them. There’s no real story in the video, which is the reason why I give passes to music videos that have lots of random sets. Impressed that these seem to be newly made sets that haven’t been recycled too.

The best thing about this music video is all the roll-offs. It’s been a while since a group has incorporated such an interesting roll-off and it’s all thanks to those fan kicks. After the first time around, I found myself anticipating it happening again, so props to the choreographer who came up with that.

My Thoughts on Heechul x Wheein’s “Narcissus” Music Video

SM Station features Heechul, Wheein & Jungmo in “Narcissus.”

The first thing that came to mind is this sounds exactly like something TRAX would release. It particularly reminds me of TRAX’s “Blind” (which happens to be my fave rock ballad to dramatically belt at noraebang). To be honest, I never felt like Heechul was all that strong of a singer and he hasn’t really showcased his vocals… ever, but I think this might be the first song to do so. I would have never expected Heechul and Wheein to collaborate on a song together, but it’s proven to be quite the interesting pairing. It’s the kind of song that I’m really curious to hear live because it could be amazingly great or amazingly terrible. (Since this song is so TRAX, I just can’t help but wonder what this would sound like if it featured Jay instead of Heechul.)

My Thoughts on History’s “Queen” Music Video

History is back with “Queen.”

The song’s got that sax and overall sound that’s very reminiscent of Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty to Me.” The dance performance parts of the video look pretty good as is, but I don’t really get the story the video’s trying to present. The boys are doing a bunch of random things like eating cereal, boxing or spraying lighter fluid all over the floor, and then they are dressed in suits placing puzzle pieces on a throne as if summoning the “queen.” But well, nobody shows up. I think the story part wasn’t really necessary and they could have just stuck to showcasing a performance because I think that’s where all the entertainment value is for this sort of release.

My Thoughts on Block B’s “Toy” Music Video

Block B returns with “Toy.”

The song is about how Block B is willing to be treated as “toys” if that means they can give their all to a girl and be by her side. The music video depicts the boys as mannequins and they are constantly thrown out like trash, but they’re willing to be treated ruthlessly for that one girl. I like that they go with the concept and sing the song with dead eyes like a toy, but if there’s one thing I’d like to change about the video, it’s the clothes. I feel like they could have gone with something more uniform, generic or doll/toy-like to keep running with that I’m-dispensable-to-you concept. There’s a lyric that says, “To me, you’re the only one, but to you, I’m one of many,” so I think it would go really well if they all wore the same thing as if they’re just no different to her.

My Thoughts on NCT U’s “Without You” Music Video

NCT U releases their second single “Without You.”

To be honest, I feel like I’ve heard this song before. Something like EXO’s “Lucky.” Currently too lazy to check if it’s the same music producer, but it doesn’t sound like a very unique song. I think I’ll have to backpedal and say that “The 7th Sense” is the better track of the 2 and with the more interesting video. So far NCT U’s debut hasn’t wow-ed me, but that’s not all that different from EXO’s debut in that their debut wasn’t all that popular and then they exploded with “Wolf” in their following promotions. Who knows NCT U might pull an EXO like their seniors and have a ridiculously popular comeback.

My Thoughts on CHERRSEE’s “Mystery” Music Video

Brave Brothers debuts their first Japanese girl group CHERRSEE with “Mystery.”

You might recognize many sets from the video, as it was filmed in Korea (and the sets were used in other Brave Brothers videos) and features Bigstar’s Feeldog (also under Brave Sound). The story basically is about the girls of CHERRSEE visiting a diner and they mess with Feeldog, creating a huge mess in his restaurant. He finds out that the girls were behind it and they left their number behind and he smiles at it. I don’t know; even if they were cute, I’d be pissed that a bunch of girls wrecked my diner.

My Thoughts on NCT U’s “The 7th Sense” Music Video

SM debuts their latest boy group NCT U with “The 7th Sense.”

I usually only watch a music video once before writing about it, but I didn’t really have an opinion on it after the first watch, so I had to give it a few more listens. The style of the song is pretty popular nowadays in the hip hop scene, that really chill subdued style . I don’t think it’s the best effort of the genre, but it has its moments, especially the bridge. While the song didn’t entirely hook me, the video visuals matched really well with the song style. I liked that they filmed the video in a large empty room with red lighting. It’s a little jarring at first, but it’s very fitting. Plus, the choreography was great. I really liked how they ended the video with dancing to no music.

edit. Actually, the performance video is everything. While the music video makes the song feel even slower, the performance video showcases dynamic choreography that make the viewing experience all the more engaging. Hands down the best performance video of 2016.

My Thoughts on JYP’s “Still Alive” Music Video

JYP writes a song about why he’s the greatest in “Still Alive.”

It’s a fun song in which JYP details his singing career and popularity since the 90s. He basically toots his own horn the entire time, but it’s not like what he’s saying isn’t true. The video is the best part, as he dresses up in different era costumes showing that he’s been around for them all. My favorite part is how he re-creates all his CD covers. Can’t forget to mention that he brought back his notorious plastic pants too.

My Thoughts on Chen x Heize’s “Lil’ Something” Music Video

Chen releases a song with Heize titled “Lil’ Something” for SM’s Station weekly series.

It’s pretty hard to keep up with all the weekly releases, but to be honest, not many of them have been all that memorable. Except for Chen x Heize’s “Lil’ Something.”

The upbeat track is a fun pop track with disco elements that feature both Chen and Heize’s vocals in a really pleasant way. The music video also features both artists as interns working at a fashion show, busy preparing for the show. Chen’s constantly looking at Heize, trying to find opportunities to talk to her while working. The video is filled with a bunch of longing glances and awkward moments, but in the end, she comes to chat with him after the show. It’s a cute video for a nice song.
