After YEZI’s participation on Unpretty Rapstar, she gained quite a bit of popularity and has now released her first single release, promoting “Cider.”
Right from the get go, I liked how the video opened with something like black shutters covering the entire screen and receding to the beat of the snaps. The video follows YEZI as she rejects being told what to do, doing whatever she wants on set. She does do some pretty typical things in “I do what I want” videos like throwing paint around, but I think what makes the video so enjoyable is that she really performs well in the video. Like she looks like she really believes what she raps, in that she shouldn’t care about what others think because whatever actions she takes, she’s the one who will have to deal with the consequences. So, she should just do what she wants and take responsibility for her own actions and not blame others. In other words, she looks really natural & doesn’t go overboard with the badassery and that’s what makes the video (whereas others come off looking like tryhards and that ultimately just ruins the whole concept).
