San E and Mad Clown come together for a collaboration “Sour Grapes.” The literal English translation of the title is actually “Inedible Persimmon,” which is the reason why there is a persimmon theme going on with the video & not grapes. “Sour Grapes” is in reference to the fable of the fox and the grapes who can’t reach a bunch of grapes & rather than admitting defeat, just deems them as sour/undesirable. So, this ties into the song being about a guy who tries to get a girl to fall for him & when he can’t have her, he just writes her off as undesirable anyway.
Directed by VISHOP (who’s been doing a lot of videos for Starship), the video is loads of fun and it really makes the song even more entertaining as it satirizes all the other songs about entitled men believing women are theirs for the taking and insulting them when they can’t have them.
There are a lot of things I like about the video, but I’ll just note a few. I love all the fruit puns in the video from apology (in Korean, it also means apple), “falling for me” (in Korean, it sounds like banana), and of course all the persimmons. I’m a sucker for puns. Also, I like all the vision-related imagery which goes with perspectives & seeing things in different ways like the the vision tests for distance/color blindness and the 3d glasses. Can’t forget the Drake “Hotline Bling” reference either.
