My Thoughts on tofubeats’ “Positive” Music Video

tofubeat releases a new track “Positive” featuring Dream Ami.

For those who have a foot phobia, I highly advise you not to watch this video. For the rest of us, I think this is a really fun video for an upbeat track. The video features a bunch of feet and legs, dancing and prancing about. I really enjoyed that they got creative with the settings and props, as you might see a woman’s legs dancing in heels and suddenly the legs become a hairy beast in a skirt. Plus, the people dance in a variety of shoes which I think is meant to show that anyone and everyone can dance to the song. Also, loved the final touch to the video when the tennis ball bounces down the stairs to the beat of the song.

My Thoughts on T-ARA’s “So Crazy” Music Video

T-ARA returns with a sailor concept for “So Crazy.”

It appears that the girls of T-ARA work at a cafeteria and they are mistreated and looked down on by the marines. All the men seem to fawn over this one female marine (played by a comedian). After a day of mishaps and bullying at the cafeteria, the girls retreat to their room. There they receive an invitation to participate in a beauty contest. They study up on how to present themselves in the most attractive way possible. Strangely enough the competition is between all the girls of T-ARA vs. that one female marine. Sure enough, T-ARA win and the tables turn as everybody fawns over the girls now at the cafeteria. For this song, T-ARA goes for a sailor concept, performing both cute and sexy moves to their upbeat track.

My Thoughts on GD&TOP’s “Zutter” Music Video

GD&TOP release a new song “Zutter” as part of Big Bang’s 4-part monthly promotion.

The video looks like GD&TOP’s take on the Korean gambling film “Tazza,” which the song makes references to & TOP plays the lead “Daegil” in the second installment of the movie. It basically is like the film in which GD&TOP are gamblers and get beaten up/tortured for cheating (tazza means “swindler” in Korean). But in the end, they manage to escape looking all slick and blow the place up before driving away in a stylish car. What makes it a GD&TOP collaboration are the quirks to the video that add a fun comedic effect such as the duo’s silly dance break and their out of control urination-fest.

My Thoughts on SHINee’s “Married to the Music” Music Video

SHINee comes back with a repackaged album titled “Married to the Music” with title track of the same name.

SHINee consistently releases solid music with great choreography and “Married to the Music” certainly does not disappoint. It begins with the words “Marriage is a slow death.” The video has a “Rocky Horror Picture Show” vibe to it, borrowing the comedy/horror aspects of the film. It’s a concept that fits so well with SHINee and they really have fun with it, as each member joins a bizarre party where each member ends up losing a body part (or you’re Minho and you get your whole head lit up in flames). I think that as the members are married to music, music slowly takes over their senses and “slowly kills” them, so in the end in the final shot you see a person who is made up of all of SHINee’s stolen body parts.

There are so many different instances in which I really like how the video was filmed and edited so I’ll list two:

–  When a glass of the questionably neon liquid is drunken by the camera & when lowered, the scene reveals Jonghyun and Onew suddenly surrounded by partygoers

– When they play spin the bottle and it cuts to Key spinning on a spinning target and to Onew swinging a bat while trying to strike a piñata (I really like the continuity of all these shots)

Really happy with the result! Now I’m just waiting for SHINee to actually embark on a real world tour (aka visiting at least 2 continents other than Asia).

My Thoughts on Yoo Seung Woo’s “You’re Beautiful” Music Video

Yoo Seung Woo returns with a lighthearted track titled “You’re Beautiful.”

The video starts off with Yoo Seung Woo and labelmates Boyfriend’s Jungmin and MONSTA X’s Kihyun reciting a Japanese incantation that is supposed to allow them to communicate with ghosts. They ask, “Are you a woman?” and then the upbeat song begins playing. I thought it was really clever that they set the audience up to believe the ghost was the female in the video (GFRIEND’s Eunha) due to the initial question at the beginning of the video, when in reality, it was Yoo Seung Woo all along. Once that was revealed, the mood turned bittersweet and you could see that Yoo Seung Woo yearned for his friends and the beautiful girl who he’s singing about in the song. I thought it was an interesting, well-thought-out story that tied into the song in a really engaging way that would make the viewer feel a range of emotions. Personally, this is one of my favorite music videos I’ve seen in a while for its storyline!

My Thoughts on B1A4’s “Sweet Girl” Music Video

B1A4 returns as ultra romantic men in “Sweet Girl.”

The video starts off with B1A4 and OH MY GIRL’s Jiho meeting at a jazz club and the scenarios begin to play out. Gongchan is a prince, CNU is a magician, Jinyoung is a… I don’t know he’s hanging out with her in a tent, Baro is a lost guy trying to follow her in a house full of doors, while Sandeul frolics in the clouds with her. I really like how the video uses a lot of pink and blue hues as its central color scheme. Although I find the scenarios a bit cheesy for my taste, I think they’re depicted in a really visually pleasing way, particularly CNU and Sandeul’s scenes. I think the costuming and set design and colors were really nice for Jinyoung’s scenes. This kind of concept really fits B1A4 and it’s nice to see a male group come back with a softer, more delicate kind of pop song.

My Thoughts on BEAST’s “YeY” Music Video

After releasing their pre-release track “Gotta Go to Work,” the group is back with their “YeY.”

Just as you can guess from the song, it’s an upbeat dance track with numerous yeys filling up the chorus. I feel that it’s not one of the group’s strongest title tracks, but I think it’ll be another song to fit right in with the other summer tracks. After a couple listens, I realize that I quite like the instrumentals though. And I didn’t realize that I missed hearing Yoseob’s voice either.

Things that make me sad about the music video though: Junhyung & Hyunseung’s hair. I was largely distracted by that, so I actually don’t remember anything about the video really. But it was just a generic party video anyway, so I don’t think I missed much.

My Thoughts on Big Bang’s “Let’s Not Fall in Love” Music Video

Big Bang releases their final title track “Let’s Not Fall in Love” for their 4-part monthly promotions.

This might be the first Big Bang video in a while that features the cute, romantic side of the members, as the video is essentially a compilation of the members sharing playful and intimate moments with their lovers. However throughout the video, there are glimpses of the members looking sorrowful which are the moments that link to the lyrics of the song. Despite the video being dreamy and romantic, the song is about not wanting to fall in love because they’re afraid of becoming attached and not being able to provide the happiness that a relationship implies.

My Thoughts on Apink’s “Petal” Music Video

Apink has been promoting their title track “Remember” and now they have released a video for their followup track “Petal.”

The music video isn’t really much else besides a nice pretty, nature video featuring the lovely ladies of Apink and lots of flowers. It seems more like a simple music video made to just give fans a little present. What I like about the video are their outfits! They remind me of Monet watercolor paintings with their flower-esque pastel design.

My Thoughts on Atarashii Gakkou no Leaders’ “Kamu to Funyan” Music Video

I’m not familiar with the Japanese group Atarashii Gakkou no Leaders (which translates to New School Leaders in English), but I heard that they released a 360 VR music video which obviously means that I had to check it out immediately.

I can’t say I dig the song, but if you were impressed by INFINITE’s “Bad” 360 VR music video, this group’s music video will definitely intrigue you as they effectively show the creative potential to 360 VR.

There’s a lot of stuff going on in the video so literally every time you watch the video, you’re guaranteed to see something different. Different scenes of the video are shot from different angles and people are doing different things every which way you look, exercising the potential of the 360. What’s the point of being able to spin around if everything is a mere reflection/exactly the same, right?

Totally looking forward to seeing more creative videos in 360 VR!
