Well known for being part of experimental Korean group Clazziquai, Horan finally makes her solo debut after being on the music scene for nearly 15 years.
“She’s Alright” is about a woman who tries to mask her pain, claiming to be “alright.” The song has a very interesting upbeat sound that lightens up the sad lyrics. The video features Horan with a totally new look featuring long green locks. While I’m not usually down for green hair, I think it really works for her. The video features Horan as separate from the storyline, as she seems kind of like a mystical figure with green hair and modified traditional Asian-styled outfit. The video includes a lot of scenes that resemble something out of the Sims.
Recently, Instagram is a really hot social media platform used in Korean music videos & Horan’s is another video to add to that list. With how relevant social media has become to present day life, I like how she incorporated the effects of it into the lead female’s life. She pretends to be fine and uploads things onto Instagram that people seem to endlessly “like,” but she’s not really doing all that well. But when she’s out drunk in the streets, people come over to invade her privacy and upload photos of her passed out. The final shot of the lead is when she takes a photo of herself with a finger to her lips as if motioning silence. That could be interpreted in a lot of ways, but my take is that she wants to stop using Instagram as a way to pretend that she’s alright and she’ll just deal with her own pain in silence without other people judging or watching her. Thoughts?
Random note: With the song title & the similarity in musical styles, I can’t help but wonder what a Horan and Lim Kim collaboration would sound like.
